Professional firearms training from certified NRA instructors
All courses are taught at the Mansfield Fish and Game located at 510 East Street, Mansfield, MA. All morning courses begin at 9:00 a.m. Afternoon courses begin at 2:00 p.m. Students are encouraged to arrive at least 15 minutes early.
All shooting takes place at the “Instructor Range”. It is an outdoor range, students are required to wear sturdy footwear (no open toe shoes, sandals of any kind.) We conduct classes twelve months of the year, rain or shine. It is recommended that students dress for success! Feel free to bring water or snacks.
We provide eye and ear protection. Students are encouraged to purchase their own as you will most likely be shooting again at a later date. Firearms and ammo are provided for free for the LTC class and the Skill Builder courses.
Generally speaking, FTS runs two types of courses:
- Basic Firearms Safety Course for students interested in obtaining their License to Carry.
- The rest of the courses are for students who have already taken an LTC course. Those courses range from beginner Skill Builder courses up to advanced courses.
Whatever class you are attending, all students meet and greet in the classroom. Attendance is taken followed by introductions. ALL STUDENTS ARE TAUGHT THE SAFETY RULES. It doesn’t matter what level of shooter, the background or the experience, every student goes through the same Safety Brief.
We offer the following types of classes, click one to view the details each course.

Competitive Shooting
STEEL CHALLENGE COMPETITION TRAINING
Looking for a simple and straightforward shooting competition that won’t break the bank? We go over everything about Steel Challenge (SCSA). Looking for a simple and straightforward shooting competition that doesn’t require tons of special equipment or learning a bunch of nitpicky rules just to figure out the basics of how a match works?
Then Steel Challenge is for you.
Steel Challenge competition is a fun and exciting avenue of speed shooting competition, but it’s ultimately not much more than organized, competitive plinking.
Competitors shoot in eight stages of five targets each. In each stage, shooters give five runs, or opportunities to shoot the stage’s course (with the exception of Outer Limits, in which shooters only get four runs). You may also hear runs referred to as “strings.”
Each run is timed and the shooter must hit all five targets to complete the run, but only need to hit each target once and are allowed as many rounds as they need. One target is designated the “stop plate.”
The timer cut off is triggered by hitting the stop plate, so the shooter must hit all four other targets before hitting the stop plate.
They can hit the other four targets in any order they choose before hitting the stop plate–unless a stage’s rules designate otherwise–but the setups of the different stages typically encourage certain shooting patterns.
